References from the Old Testament Prophets

The Food Miracles:

     Moses — God provided bread from heaven (“manna”) and quail for forty years of wilderness wanderings (Exodus 16:13-14; Exodus 16:31-35).

     Joshua — Saw the provision of bread from heaven and also presided over the end of the manna and the fulfillment of the promises to bring them into the land (Joshua 5:11-12).

     Elijah — Fed bread/meat in the wilderness by ravens, and God used him to provide miraculously replenishing oil and grain for a widow (1 Kings 17:3-6; 1 Kings 17:8-16).

     Elisha — Closest to the miracle of Jesus in Mark 6; feeds multitude of people with a handful of loaves of bread (2 Kings 4:42-44).

     Summary Verse — God spreads a table in the wilderness (Psalm 78:19).

The Water Miracles:

     Moses — crosses the Red Sea with Israel (Exodus 14:21-22).

     Joshua — crosses the Jordan River with Israel (Joshua 3:14-17).

     Elijah — crosses the Jordan River (2 Kings 2:6-8).

     Elisha — crosses the Jordan River (2 Kings 2:13-14).

     Summary Verses — God is pictured in Job as the One who “treads on the waters” (Job 9:8; Job 38:16).
